A cycling holiday along the northern Atlantic Coast from Porto to Coimbra
This bike tour leads us along the Atlantic coast from Porto to Coimbra. The ride starts at the outlet of the Douro river after which it follows the famous lagoon of the Ria de Aveiro until it meets the Mondego river in Figueira da Foz. Having arrived there we will move inland along the Mondego river to end the tour in Coimbra.
During the first five days of this journey we will be biking surrounded by water and pine forests. Aveiro, a small city half way through the tour, with its unique characteristics is well worth a visit. The bike friendly and picturesque city has colourful barges that are cruising along the canals, salt fields that were once of great importance for the local industry and many little restaurants which serve delicious fresh fish and can prove to be a very pleasant experience.
During the last two days of the tour once we have left Figueira da Foz behind, we will follow the shores of the Mondego river passing the millennial rice fields. Halfway to Coimbra we encounter the castle town Montemor-o-Velho. This town, built on the top of a hill, is the ideal place to spend the night.
The next day we continue our journey to our destination of Coimbra, a historical city well known for its university, one of the oldest in Europe.
The daily distances are relatively short and all on the level which makes it possible to enjoy biking at our own pace and visiting the many beaches and quiet places we discover along the way. The bike tour perfectly fits families and participants that are not used to biking long distances.
