A circular bike ride at the Ladário mountain range
The Vouga valley is the ‘sacred cow’ for those who practice downhill mountain-biking in this region. The accentuated ground of the valley slopes offer an excellent challenge with a wide variety of difficulty levels. The diversity and quantity of the dirt tracks and small roads create an infinite possibility of combinations of biking trails.
The proposed route takes us through the Ladário Mountain Range and over a small granite peak with an altitude of about 800m that is located on the left bank of the Vouga river. Since it is a circuit you don’t need a transfer and the trail starts and ends at the accommodation. The circuit covers 32 km and is a level four (very difficult) trail, although very accessible for those who are in good shape and used to biking.
Besides the pleasurable biking it offers, this circuit has a lot more to offer with it’s beautiful surroundings and incredible views. The trail takes us to the top of the mountain range, where you should stop to enjoy the far reaching vista and gaze out over a panoramic view of all the surrounding mountains and valleys. The ascent is made through a forest that dissipates as we get higher in altitude then gives way to small agricultural fields, terraces, pastoral lands and old granite villages where people are still actively practising small scale agriculture.
The descent, which is considerably easier, reveals a more open landscape with granite outcrops that peek out of the low vegetation. Approaching the foot of the mountain, the trail continues to meander through small villages which are nestled in the valley. Just before the end of the ride there will be another scheduled stop, not just to enjoy the surroundings but also to restore our energies with a local snack.
